چکیده

This paper is concerned with the fast resolution of nonlinear and linear algebraic equations arising from a fully implicit ®nite volume discretization of two-phase ̄ow in porous media. We employ a Newton-multigrid algorithm on unstructured meshes in two and three space dimensions. The discretized operator is used for the coarse grid systems in the multigrid method. Problems with discontinuous coecients are avoided by using a newly truncated restriction operator and an outer Krylov-space method. We show an optimal order of convergence for a wide range of two-phase ̄ow problems including heterogeneous media and vanishing capillary pressure in an experimental way. Furthermore, we present a data parallel implementation of the algorithm with speedup results. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Multilevel Upscaling in Heterogeneous Porous Media

The multiscale structure of heterogeneous porous media prevents a straightforward numerical treatment of the underlying mathematical ow models. In particular, fully resolved ow simulations are intractable and yet the ne-scale structure of a porous medium may signiicantly innuence the coarse-scale properties of the solution (e.g., average ow rates). Consequently, homogenization or upscaling proc...

Fast Solvers and Efficient Numerical Cfd Techniques for Dynamic Porous Media Problems

Abstract. We present a fully implicit, monolithic finite element solution scheme to efficiently solve the governing set of differential algebraic equations of incompressible poroelastodynamics. Thereby, we proceed from a two-dimensional, biphasic, saturated porous medium model with intrinsically coupled and incompressible solid and fluid constituents. Our approach, motivated by well-accepted CF...

On special CFD techniques for the efficient solution of dynamic porous media problems

We present an efficient monolithic finite element solution scheme to solve the set of PDEs governing a two-dimensional biphasic saturated TPM model with intrinsically coupled solid and fluid constituents. Our approach, coming from CFD techniques and originally developed for the efficient simulation of incompressible flow problems, is characterized by the following aspects: (1) a special treatme...

A reduced degree of freedom method for simulating non-isothermal multi-phase ̄ow in a porous medium

Two solution algorithms, with guaranteed memory savings over fully implicit methods, are presented for solving coupled processes in subsurface hydrology. They are applied to problems of non-isothermal multi-phase ̄ow in porous media using both an equivalent continuum approximation and a dual-permeability approach. One algorithm uses an approximation of the Jacobian matrix during the Newton±Raph...
